Christoffer Olsen
Christoffer Olsen, also written Christopher, was born in Stjørdal parish, Nord-Trøndelag, about 1788. He spent nearly his whole life on the farm Bolkan in Skatval, the northern part of the parish. When the census was taken on 1 February 1801 he was there already, a boy of 14 counted among the farm's servants. On 9 October 1803 he was confirmed at Skatval church, written as Christopher Olsen of Bolkan, fourth in the line of boys that day.
By early 1819 he was a bachelor living at Helgaard. On 8 February 1819, in Værnes church, he married Mali Nielsdatter, a widow of Bolkangjerdet. He was 31; she was 32. Bolkangjerdet was a cottar's place under the Bolkan farm, and the marriage brought him back to it. He became its husmann, its cottar: a man who held a small plot on the farmer's land and paid for it in labour days, with no title to the ground.
Three of their children are known. Ole was born at Bolkangjerdet about 1822 and confirmed at Skatval on 1 October 1837. Peter Christian was born on 10 June 1825 and baptised on 7 August. Gurina was baptised on 26 June 1831, when the clerk wrote the family's home as Bolkanplads.
Christoffer died at Bolkan on 23 November 1837 and was buried on 1 December. The burial register calls him husmann at Bolkan. It gives his age as 41 and a half, ten years younger than his marriage and his confirmation make him. Peter Christian was twelve and Gurina six. Ole had been confirmed seven weeks before.
The church went on writing him into his children's records after his death. Peter Christian's confirmation in 1840, Gurina's in 1845 and Peter Christian's marriage in 1848 all name Christoffer Olsen as the father, and Gurina's still calls him the husmann at Bolkanplads.
