Christopher Doner
Christopher Doner was born on 22 December 1820 in Fairfield County, Ohio. On 8 June 1842 he married Emma Stewart, and the next May a son, Darius, was born at Lancaster, the Fairfield County seat.
Soon after the wedding the couple moved west to Lincoln, Illinois. In the fall of 1861, the first year of the Civil War, they moved on to Bloomington in McLean County. In 1866 they settled at Saybrook, a village in the east of the county, and stayed there twenty four years. Their daughter Della was born that same year, in September 1866. She was married at Saybrook in April 1888 to James T. Kerr, the son of McCager Kerr.
Fourteen children were born to Christopher and Emma, and half of them died before their father. Their son Darius T. Doner served in the 7th Illinois Infantry in the Civil War and died in February 1867 at twenty three. He is buried in the Civil War veterans' section at Evergreen Cemetery in Bloomington.
In 1890 Christopher and Emma moved back to Bloomington. He died there at a quarter to one in the morning of 6 June 1893, at his home at 1018 East Taylor Street, after two weeks of Bright's disease, a disease of the kidneys. He was seventy two. The Leader called him "a christian man and a member of the M. E. church", the Methodist Episcopal church. Seven of the fourteen children were living: Sarah Watson in Kansas, Christian at Elwood, Indiana, John in California, Fairfield at Le Roy, David at Kansas City, Grant in Bloomington, and Della Kerr at Saybrook. He is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Bloomington, where his wife was laid beside him in 1908.
