Cicelia Catina

Cicelia Catina married William B. Heal at Hamilton County on 10 October 1855, book B10 page 49. Their son William was born on 19 December 1856.

The 1860 census of the 8th Ward of Cincinnati has her as Cecelia A, twenty three, born in Ohio. By 1870 she is Cecilia Heal, twenty nine, born in Virginia, at the head of her own household in the same ward, with William and Charles and no husband on the page. She was a widow in her early thirties with two boys.

Her son's 1932 death certificate calls her LOUISE CATINA. The 1855 return says Cicelia. The surname is the same and Catina is not a name two families in Cincinnati carried, so it is one woman and the certificate is wrong about the half of her name that was easiest to get wrong.

CATINA is a Romance-language surname. A different Louisa Catina kept house in Cincinnati Ward 15 into the twentieth century, born October 1839 in Virginia, and the 1900 census gives her father's birthplace as ITALY and her mother's as CUBA. She is not this woman, because the same page says she bore no children at all.

Her own father is not known. The surname is found in France, Spain, Catalonia, Mexico and Venezuela as well as Italy, and there is no Catina household in the Ohio censuses of 1850 or 1860. Louisa's father, Marten Catina, is a candidate, since the surname is rare enough in Cincinnati that the two women were probably sisters, but no record names Cicelia's father. She was born about 1837 in Ohio or Virginia, which puts her family in America decades before the Italian and Spanish arrivals of the later century.
