Clara Salazar was born on 11 August 1921 at Yancey, a small farming settlement in Medina County, Texas. Her father was Crescencio Salazar and her mother was Santos Sanchez. She named them both when she applied for a Social Security number in Saginaw in September 1952.
She married Victoriano Moncada, called Victor, by 1939, when she was about seventeen. In April 1940 she was 18 and keeping house for him at Yancey, with a year-old son, Esau, later called Isaac. Her daughter Helena was born that June. Oralia, Robert and Pedro followed in Texas.
After the war the family worked the fields of Michigan and Ohio. Her son Jesus was born in Michigan and her son Carlos in Ohio. By April 1950 they lived in a basement flat in Saginaw, where Victor worked in a foundry. Clara was 29, with eight children at home. More were born in Saginaw, among them Benjamin in 1954, Enrique and Alicia.
Clara Moncada died in Saginaw on 15 October 1997, aged 76. She is buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Saginaw, where Victor was buried four years later.
