Clemens Huntting

Clemens Huntting was born on 8 February 1738 at East Hampton on Long Island and baptized there on 8 October of the same year. The town's baptisms enter her as '8 Oct. A daughter of John Huntting. Clemens'. She was a daughter of Deacon John Huntting and of Clemens Parsons, who had been a Conkling widow when he married her. Her grandfather was the Rev. Nathaniel Huntting, minister of East Hampton. She carried her mother's given name, and her father's will spells it Clemence. She grew up with eight sisters, and with a half sister, Jane Conkling, from her mother's first marriage.

She became the second wife of Jacob Sherrill of East Hampton, born 1722, whose first wife Abigail Conkling had died. The town books write the family Sherry and Sheril, and the church admissions list 'Jacob Sheril. x Clemens Sheril, his wife'. Her grandfather had written the burial of her husband's grandfather in 1719: Goodman Sherry, aged above 70 years, died. Her son Samuel was born in 1774.

Her father named her in his will of 23 February 1768, proved 25 April that year, as his daughter Clemence Sherrill. Her husband signed the List of Associators of East Hampton at the start of the Revolution, on 5 May 1775. He died on 4 November 1801 in his seventy ninth year, and was buried in the North Cemetery there.

Soon after his death she left Long Island and went to New Hartford in Oneida County to live with her sons Jacob and Lewis, who had gone into making carding machines and dressing cloth. She died there on 8 August 1820, aged eighty two, and was buried in the old cemetery beside her daughter Esther.
