Cornelius Dollahite
Cornelius Dollahite is named as the father of Wiley Dollahite by two family compilations. Carr P. Collins Jr.'s ancestor chart of 1960 puts "CORNELIUS DOLLAHITE" in the generation above Wiley and his wife Sarah Perkins. A family history of 1971 speaks of "our grandmother, Mary Ann Dollahite, daughter of Wiley and granddaughter of Cornelius." No record read names Wiley as his son. His records, though, run alongside Wiley's for thirty years.
He appears first in Caswell County, North Carolina, on the Virginia line. There "Cornelius Dollarhide of the County aforesaid" bought land from Samuel Smith on 24 January 1800 and from Micajah Pleasant on 29 May 1803. Wiley had been born in Caswell County in 1798.
By 1812 he had moved to Pulaski County, Kentucky. That year "Cornelius Dollarhide and Nancy Dollar[hide] his w[ife]" sold land to Jonathan Bishop. In 1816 a "Corne Dollarhide" was party to a deed in Franklin County, Tennessee.
He settled finally in Henry County, in West Tennessee. On 24 August 1824 he made an entry for land there, and a state grant of 40 acres in his name was surveyed on 2 May 1825. In July 1825 he sold 39 acres to David Settle. That same month the county court named Wiley overseer of a road and ordered Cornelius's hands to work it. In 1827 he gave bond with a James Dollahite as co-obligor, and he was party to further bonds and suits in 1832. He sat on a jury on 12 June 1832. In March 1831 he sold 40 acres to Frederick W. Deats, and James Dollahite witnessed the deed. A Cornelius Dollahite of Henry County also acted as attorney for the heirs of James Vaughan of Caswell County, North Carolina.
He died by 1838. That year the Henry County court appointed Frederick W. Deets, John Yarbrough and George Broach Sr. "to lay off to Nancy Dollahite widow and relict of Cornelius Dollahite deceased one years provision out of the estate of said deceased." Under Tennessee law a widow was entitled to a year's support for herself and her family out of her husband's estate, set apart before his debts were paid.
His wife Nancy was living in 1812 and outlived him. In 1850 a Nancy Dollahite, 72, born in North Carolina, was living in Henry County. If that is her age, she was born about 1778 and was twenty when Wiley was born. She may have been his mother or a second wife. Wiley named a son Cornelius in 1828.
