Cornelius H. Baker, known as Hick, was born about 1822, the son of Richard and Nancy Baker. His death record and his son Samuel's death certificate say he was born in North Carolina; the censuses of 1850 and 1880 say Virginia. He married Socia Hammon, a Scott County, Virginia, girl a few years younger than he was.
In November 1850 the census taker in Russell County, Virginia, found Cornelius H. Baker, 24, farming, with Socia, 20, and a child of two, written Sally. His son Samuel was born in January or October 1849, and the papers of his life place that birth in Virginia and in Kentucky by turns.
The family crossed into eastern Kentucky in the 1860s. Their son George was born in Johnson County, on the Big Sandy, about 1868, and Adeline, Caroline and Richard were born in Kentucky in the 1850s and 1860s. In June 1880 the family was on Upper Elkhorn Creek in Pike County, Kentucky, the high headwaters of the Kentucky River under Pine Mountain. Cornelius H. Baker was 52 and Socia 52, and at home were Jackson, 30, Adaline, 17, Caroline, 16, Richard, 13, and George W., 11. Their son Samuel was farming nearby with his own family.
In the 1880s the Bakers moved back over Pine Mountain into Virginia, to the country around Clintwood that became Dickenson County in 1880. Their son George died there on 11 December 1888, aged 20. Cornelius died in Dickenson County on 7 November 1894, aged 72, of cramp colic. A son reported the death, and the commissioner of the revenue wrote him down as a farmer, a husband, born in North Carolina, the son of Richard and Nancy Baker.
Socia outlived him. In June 1900 she was 74 and living in Clintwood district with Samuel and his second family.
