Father of Susanna Ballard, who married Philetus Stewart at Hamilton in 1805. His widow's pension paper gives him a war.

He was twenty when he marched out of New Salem in 1775 and reached the outskirts of Boston the day after Bunker Hill. He went north the following year to Ticonderoga and Crown Point and down the St Lawrence until the army had to turn round, and in 1777 he was at Half Moon and Saratoga. His last service was on an armed vessel out of Boston or Salem: they took a British ship, were chased by a stronger one, and were caught trying to run for cover, and he spent nearly three months a prisoner at Halifax. A "Ballard, Dean. Seaman" is on the list of prisoners sent home from Halifax in the cartel Silver Eel in October 1778, and his wife's sworn account makes that entry his.

He applied for a pension in 1818, his congressman carried the case to the War Department, and it was refused because the service was not in the Continental line. He died at Lebanon on 15 April 1831, and his widow Anna, who could not get to court, made her mark on the declaration eighteen years later.
