Daniel Bolton
Daniel Bolton was born in Virginia on 31 May 1820, the date written in the family Bible. His tombstone gives 1 May 1820. His son Wilbur's 1905 biography says Daniel's father was a native of England.
On 4 December 1845, in Cedar County, Iowa, Daniel married Elizabeth Jane Fulwider, a Virginian about ten years younger. Their first children were born in Iowa: Nancy Harriet in 1848 and Zenas on 27 February 1851. A daughter, Ally Ann, was born and died in 1852.
In the early 1850s the family crossed the plains to Oregon with ox teams. A daughter, Ellen, was born in Utah in 1853 on the way. The 1905 biography dates the crossing to 1854. They settled first in the Willamette valley and soon moved east to The Dalles. Daniel later took land on Fifteen Mile Creek, securing a donation claim and a homestead, and raised stock and farmed. In 1870 the family was farming in the Hood River country of Wasco County with seven children at home.
More children were born in Oregon: Alvin, Simeon in 1857, Wilbur on 29 October 1860, Grifford Virgil in 1863, Edward Homer, Daniel Mitchell in 1870 and Emanuel. Several died young. The family lived many years in The Dalles.
Daniel Bolton died at The Dalles on 11 November 1887, aged 67. He is buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery there. His sons did well: Wilbur ran the largest general store in Antelope, Oregon, and Simeon served as county clerk of Wasco County.
