Daniel Poor

Daniel Poor was a husbandman of Andover and one of the town's first settlers. His estates lay along the Shawshin River at what is now North Andover, on the old road to Lawrence, and the house his grandson lived in still stood two hundred years later.

He married Mary Farnum at Boston on 20 October 1650. Eleven children were entered at Andover over the following twenty years, beginning with Sara in December 1652 and ending with Lucy in September 1670. Hannah, the fifth, was born on 6 May 1660.

He made his will in 1689, sick and not knowing how soon his great change might be. He left his wife Mary the dwelling house, all the household stuff, half the land on the near side of the Shawshin, the whole stock of cattle, sheep, swine and horses, and above two thirds of the yard, the barn and the corn on the ground. She was to pay twenty pounds each to Ruth and Lucy, the two youngest, "confiding in my sd wife that she will deal by them as well as she hath by her other daughters."

The rest is a farm being cut up. The other half of the near land went to his eldest son Daniell, less three acres already given to his daughter Martha and built on by her husband. His son John got all the upland with the meadow. Martha got twenty acres, Elizabeth all the meadow in Wade's meadow, Priscilla the meadow on the west side. And then the line that closes the older half of the family: "As for my daughters Mary, Sarah, Hannah, Deborah, they have already received their full portions according to intent & ability."

Hannah had married Lieutenant Francis Dane eight years before, which is why she was among the daughters already paid.
