Daniel R. Helmick
Daniel R. Helmick was keeping a house of ten in Harrison County in 1850: himself at forty nine, Mary at thirty nine, and eight children from Clark at fifteen down to Albert at six months. The third of them was Joanna, aged ten, who married a Leonard six years later in the next county and appears in later records as Anna Leonard.
His son Nathaniel D. Helmick, born 12 July 1837 at Georgetown, died at Fairmont in Marion County on 20 April 1923, and his death certificate names his parents as Danl. R. Helmick and Mary McKennan. The Marion County register of Joanna's marriage in 1856 gives her parents as D. R. and E. Helmick.
Helmick is a Virginia mountain surname, worn down from the German Helmig of the Tygart Valley country, and it runs thick through Randolph, Barbour and Upshur before it spills west into Harrison. Daniel gave his own birthplace as Virginia and his son's certificate gives his as West Virginia, which is the same answer given seventy three years apart.
