Daniel Radke
Daniel Radke was born in Poland about 1801, by the age given when he died. He went south with the German Lutheran families who settled Bessarabia, the province on the Black Sea that Russia had taken from the Ottoman Empire in 1812. The new colonies were given numbers and the names of Russian victories over Napoleon. Alt Elft, the eleventh, was Fère-Champenoise in Russian, and Neu Elft, its daughter colony close by, was Fère-Champenoise II.
His son August was born on 29 April 1825. By 1827 Daniel was living at Alt Elft with his wife Karoline Winter, and two more sons were baptized there: Johann on 6 February 1827 and Christoph on 6 November 1828. On 14 February 1831 Daniel married again at Neu Elft. His bride was Anna Rosina, whose surname one copy of the register gives as Gross and another as Quast. Their children were born at Neu Elft: Karolina on 1 January 1834, Friedrich on 27 September 1837, who died at eleven months, Gottlieb on 4 January 1839 and Justina on 3 October 1840. A little Rosina died in October 1845, sixteen months old.
On 9 November 1844 his son August, nineteen, married Christina Zaiser, the seventeen-year-old daughter of Michael Zaiser of Neu Elft. August named two of his sons Daniel, in 1853 and 1857, and neither lived. Christoph married Rosina Mueller in 1848 and named a son Daniel in 1856.
Daniel Radke died at Neu Elft on 30 April 1860, a married man of 59, his birthplace entered as Poland. Eighteen years later his grandson Samuel left for Kansas, and in 1879 his son August followed with Christina and five of their children.
