Daniel Thurston
Daniel Thurston was born in Michigan in March 1841, on the 26th by a memorial to him, in St. Joseph County on the Indiana line. His father had been born in New York and his mother in Connecticut.
On 9 August 1862, in St. Joseph County, he married Julia Ann Howell, who was seventeen. It was the second summer of the Civil War. Daniel served the Union as a private in Company E of the 19th Michigan Infantry, a regiment raised in southwestern Michigan in 1862, and he was a private when his service ended.
After the war Daniel and Julia moved west. Their first daughter, Florence Belle, was born about 1870 and Cora Rachel about 1873. A son born in Iowa in 1876 was given the name Franklin Pierce, the name of the fourteenth president. Bernice Harriet followed in 1879. By 1882 the family was in Kansas, where Phillip Sheridan was born on 26 July, with the name of the Union cavalry general Philip Sheridan. Maude Melvina came in 1884 and Chester Arthur, with the name of the president who had left office the year before, in 1886.
In 1900 Daniel was 59 and farming in Catherine and Saline Townships of Ellis County, Kansas. He and Julia had been married 38 years. Three children were still at home: Maud, 16, Phillip, 18, and Chester, 14.
Julia died in Ellis County on 3 November 1911. Daniel outlived her by more than twenty years. In April 1918 his sons William, Frank and Daniel came together to visit their brother Phil on a Sunday. Daniel died at Natoma on 5 June 1933, aged 92, and was buried beside Julia at Norman Cemetery under a rough-faced red granite stone: "Daniel 1841 - 1933, Julia A. His Wife 1845 - 1911".
