Daniel W. Slayton
Daniel W. Slayton farmed in Mason County and had a daughter who named her first son after him.
He is on the county birth register three times in four years as the father of Catharine in 1866, Isaac in 1868 and a second Isaac in 1869, entered variously as Daniel W. Slaten, Daniel W. Slayton and D. W. Slaten, because the clerk spelled the family however it sounded that morning. His trade on all three lines is Farmer.
He died on 15 April 1907 near Wyoma, aged seventy nine and still returned as married, which puts his birth at about 1828. His wife Mary had died in the county in June 1893.
He is named as her father on his daughter's death certificate, not on his own. West Virginia stopped asking about parents on the death form in the early 1870s and did not ask again until 1917, so his own entry says nothing about where he came from.
The family was not always in Mason County. On 25 September 1867 his son James W. Slayton, nineteen and a farmer, took out a licence to marry Martha Duncan, and the Mason County recorder filled in every line of the certificate. Under NAMES OF HUSBAND'S PARENTS he wrote Daniel W. & Mary Slayton. Under PLACE OF HUSBAND'S BIRTH he wrote Green County, Pennsylvania. So about 1848 Daniel and Mary were in the southwest corner of Pennsylvania, on the far side of the Mason-Dixon line from Monongalia County, and they came down the river country to Mason afterwards. The wedding took place the next day, 26 September 1867.
