David Evans

David Evans, a cooper of Fayette County, Georgia, born about 1801, married Sarah and raised his family on the Georgia piedmont. Fayette County had been Creek territory until the First Treaty of Indian Springs in January 1821, and the county was laid out that December, when he was about twenty. His parents are not proved. The likeliest are Isaac Evans, dead before 1830, and his widow Jane, who headed the household next door to David's in 1830. In 1880 he gave his father's birthplace as Georgia and his mother's as Ireland.

The 1830 census of Fayette County finds him with a household of five: himself, a woman in her twenties, a girl under five and two boys under five. Neither boy is in the household twenty years later, and no record names them. The county tax digest of 1843 taxes him on 101 and a quarter acres and 50 acres, on lot 85 of the thirteenth district.

The 1850 census of the twenty ninth district finds them at dwelling 813: David 49, cooper, Sarah 47, and six children, Jane M., David, Edith, Mary, Sarah and Margaret, every one of them born in Georgia. Between January 1859 and the summer of 1860 the whole household left the state, and the 1860 census finds them on 9 July at dwelling 635 in Rapides Parish, Louisiana, post office Alexandria: David 50, a farmer now, Sarah 51, and seven children, both parents still recorded as Georgia born. His daughter Edith married Harrison Benson Nash in the parish about 1868.

The family moved once more, east into Neshoba County, Mississippi. The census of 1870 finds him there at sixty eight, with three unmarried daughters at home and his son David M. next door. The census of 1880 finds him at seventy seven, still farming, with his two youngest daughters, Margaret and Fannie, at home. He is buried in the churchyard at Bethsaida, and so are two of his children: David M. Evans, who died in 1922, and Mary Evans Mowdy, who died in 1925.
