David Gilley
David Gilley was born in Georgia about 1812. A descendant's note gives his full name as David Leroy Gilley and his years as 1815 to 1880. His wife Elizabeth was also from Georgia, about twelve years younger than he was. A descendant gives her maiden name as Powers.
The family moved west in stages, and the birthplaces of the children mark each stop. The older children were born in Alabama from about 1846 to 1855. Emeline was born in Mississippi in 1856. Sarah Ann, Susan, Leroy and a younger Elizabeth were born in Louisiana between about 1859 and 1862. The youngest, John Marion, was born in Texas about 1867.
On 9 June 1870 the census taker found the family at Livingston, the seat of Polk County in the East Texas pine woods. David was 58 and farming, with land worth $300. Elizabeth, 46, kept house. Eleven of the children were at home: Hasting, 23, a farm laborer who owned land worth $100, his new wife Elizabeth, 24, whom he had married within the year, Mary, 19, James, 17, Sophronia, 15, Emeline, 13, Sarah Ann, 11, Susan and Leroy, both 9, Elizabeth, 8, and John Marion, 3.
Emeline, whose full name was Nancy Emaline, later married Arthur Rexes Cryer, whose family had come to Texas through the same Louisiana and East Texas country. She died at Buckholts in 1941. David's death is given as 1880. Where he died and where he is buried are not known.
