David Shapley
David Shapley was born in 1675, a son of David Shapley, a fisherman of Marblehead in Massachusetts. Brian J. L. Berry's Westward the American Shapleys (1987) carries him as "David Shapley (1675-1735)," and Berry's 1993 history of the family enters him as the second generation.
On 13 November 1704 he married Hephzibah French at Topsfield. The town's record reads: "SHAPLEY, David [Shepley. c. r.], of Marblehead, and Hephzibah French, Nov. 13, 1704." The church record spelled him Shepley. Two sons were baptized at Topsfield: David on 26 August 1705, entered as Shepley, and Richard on 6 April 1707.
The family moved to Killingly, in Windham County, Connecticut. In 1715 he bought farms there of Captain John Chandler of Woodstock. He gave land "for a burying-place for said Society." In Connecticut a parish was organized as an ecclesiastical society, and this ground became the burying ground of the parish that later grew into Thompson. Berry's 1993 book says "David2 and Hepzibah (French) Shapley had twelve children."
He died in 1735. His will provided for a daughter with "30 pounds to be paid her by my son John Shapley." John's son David, baptized at West Thompson in 1742, later gave land for Smith Valley Cemetery in Madison County, New York, together with a Mr. Wheeler.
