Deborah Pierce
Deborah Pierce was born on 25 April 1802, in Indiana County, Pennsylvania by her grave memorial, which also names her parents as David and Deborah (Smith) Pierce. She married John Niel, a farmer and miller of West Mahoning Township, in 1821 by the same memorial. A county history printed in 1913 says both were Baptists and calls them "excellent people."
Her children were Samuel, David, Thomas, George, Margaret, Mary, James and Benjamin. John moved the family over the line into Jefferson County, and he died there on 1 October 1854, aged 52. Deborah was a widow for the rest of her life.
At least four of her sons fought for the Union in the Civil War. Thomas was severely wounded several times. James was drafted in July 1863 and served until May 1865. David enlisted in 1864. Benjamin served more than three years. He married Jane Findley while he was home on furlough, went back to his regiment, and was killed at the battle of Fair Oaks in Virginia.
Deborah died on 10 December 1882, aged 80 years, 7 months and 15 days, and was buried beside John in Devers Cemetery. Her stone reads DEBORAH, WIFE OF JOHN NIEL.
