Della Mae Kassinger
Della Mae Kassinger was born on 22 September 1886 in Carter County, in the hill country of the Missouri Ozarks along the Current River. Her father, Lee Kassinger, was born in Carter County too. Her mother was Lula Hutchinson. By the time Della married she was living at Poplar Bluff, the county seat of Butler County, where the Ozark hills drop into the flat lowlands of the Missouri Bootheel. Her husband's obituary later called her "Della Mae Kafinger of Poplar Bluff, Mo."
She married William Franklin Hopkins of Ripley County on 20 February 1911. The license had been issued in Butler County a month before, on 19 January, when she gave her age as 24 and he his as 22. They made their home in Ripley County, first around Doniphan and later at Flatwoods, where William ran a trucking business. Their children were William Ezra, born in 1913, Edith in 1914, Ruth in 1916 and Frank Marvin in 1920. In 1942 her youngest son gave her name to the Social Security office as Dellie Casanger, spelled the way it was said.
In January 1946 Della fell ill with lobar pneumonia. The doctor from Doniphan attended her from 14 January. She died at home in Flatwoods at 10:20 in the morning on 18 January 1946, aged 59, after a week's illness. William gave the facts for her death certificate. L. O. Edwards, the undertaker at Doniphan, buried her on 21 January at Spring Hill Cemetery in Flatwoods Township, under a white marble stone carved with flowers at the corners: "Della Mae Hopkins, 1886 - 1946. May she rest in peace."
