Dietrich Heinrich Ernst Linnemeier
Dietrich Heinrich Ernst Linnemeier was born in Germany on 20 February 1834, by his memorial. He grew up at Petershagener Heide, the heath settlement of Petershagen in Kreis Minden, Westphalia, the district most of the Fort Wayne German settlement came from.
In the summer of 1854, at twenty, he crossed from Bremen to New York on the ship President Smidt. He travelled in a party headed by Georg Heinrich Linnemeyer, a carpenter of fifty-nine from Petershagener Heide, and they were bound for Fort Wayne, Indiana. The passenger list sets the party out as one family. After Georg Heinrich come Sophie, fifty-nine; Heinrich Conrad, thirty; Diedrich, twenty; Friedrich, eighteen; Mina, sixteen; a second Sophie, twenty-nine; and Heinrich, five months old.
The list states no relationships. Georg Heinrich and Sophie are very probably his parents, and Heinrich Conrad, Friedrich and Mina very probably his brothers and sister. The younger Sophie and the baby are very probably Heinrich Conrad's wife and son.
He married Louise Hitzemann, five years younger, who came over on the same ship a year after him from Bierde, another village of Kreis Minden. They farmed in Washington township, Allen County, Indiana.
They had seven children: Henry, born in 1862; Dietrich, 1865; Fred, 1868; Minnie, 1870; Louise, 1873; William, born on 11 June 1875; and Mary, born on 23 January 1878. He died in Washington township on 12 September 1879, at forty-five, leaving Louise with seven children, the youngest twenty months old. His stone at Concordia Lutheran Cemetery, Fort Wayne, has weathered nearly smooth, and only the dates can be made out.
