Dolly May James
Dolly May James was born on 1 May 1901 in Wisconsin. She married Samuel Arthur Hewitt, a Wisconsin man who had served in the Army in the First World War. In 1930 they were living in Flambeau township, Rusk County, in northern Wisconsin, with six children: Dorcas, 10, Jessie, 8, Alzada, 6, Beatrice, 4, Samuel Jr., 2, born at Joplin, Missouri, and the baby Geraldine. Dolly was 29, so she had her first child at about nineteen.
By 1950 she and Samuel were separated, and Dolly was running a crowded house in Kansas City. On 10 April 1950 the census taker found her at 2641 East Sixth Street, giving her name as Dollie M. Hewitt, age 48, born in Wisconsin. With her were her sons Rudolph, 18, born in Wisconsin, Clinton John, 12, born in Missouri, and Eugene Carl, 11, born in Arkansas. Her son Samuel, a painter, was there with his wife Dorothy and their baby Carol Jean. Her daughter Geraldine Hughes, 19, had her newborn son David Lee. A second grandson, James D. Hewitt, aged 2, had been born in Washington state. Her sister Mary L., 40, also separated and born in Wisconsin, was living with her, along with a three year old nephew, Teddy, and a lodger, Elmer E. Landers.
The moves are written in the birthplaces: Wisconsin, then Missouri, then Arkansas, then Wisconsin again, and finally Kansas City.
Dolly May Hewitt died on 25 January 1989, aged 87. She is buried in the Garden of Prayer at Mount Washington Cemetery, Independence, Missouri. Her red granite stone reads "BELOVED MOTHER" and "GRANDMA". Her grandson Thomas Richard Hewitt, who died in 1994, lies in the same section.
