Doris Lorella (Maudsley) Day

Doris Lorella Maudsley was born at Binghamton, New York on 16 March 1923, the eldest child of Ellis Sidney Maudsley and Edna Adele Rauner. She went to school at Hancock and at Damascus, on the two sides of the upper Delaware where the family had been for three generations. She graduated from Hancock High School in 1940.

She married Maurice Day at Equinunk on 30 August 1940, months after finishing school. She was seventeen and he was twenty three. They settled at Honesdale, the county seat, and in 1952 they opened Day's Bakery on Main Street.

The bakery ran for sixty three years. Doris worked from nine in the morning until half past eleven at night and was known through the town for her cake decorating. The bakery is dated as closing in 2015, when she was ninety two, though she said herself that she worked there until she was ninety four.

She and Maurice raised four children. Maurice "Elmer" Day Jr. was born in 1948 and died in 2020, and Edwin Day also died before his mother. Carolyn married Bobby Love and lives in Virginia, and Lois Day lives at Pittston. There were ten grandchildren, one of whom died before her, fifteen great-grandchildren and ten great-great-grandchildren.

Maurice died in 1999. Doris lived another twenty five years in Honesdale, a member of Central United Methodist Church, which named her its oldest living member in 2021. She died at home on 18 February 2024, twenty seven days short of a hundred and one. Her obituary called her the matriarch of her family and a caregiver to many others. She is buried at Bethany Cemetery in Wayne County, beside Maurice.
