Dorothy Bennett

Dorothy Bennett was born at Lyme, Connecticut, on 19 May 1688. The town clerk wrote her as "Dorete." She was the sixth of the seven children of Henry Bennet and his wife Sarah Champion. Her mother's father, Henry Champion, was one of the first settlers of Saybrook and Lyme. Her brothers and sisters were Caleb, Rose, John, Sarah, Love and Henry.

On 24 February 1706/7, when she was eighteen, her father signed a deed of gift to her. It was recorded at Lyme in March 1707. Her intention of marriage with Jeremiah Wood was dated 20 March 1709, "both of Lyme." The Lyme book records the wedding: "Jeremiah Wood was married unto Dority Benett the 29th March 1709."

She went with her husband to Stow, Massachusetts. Their first four children were born there: Sarah in April 1710, Elizabeth in October 1711, Joseph in May 1713 and Lucy in March 1715. By 1717 the family had moved to Littleton, where she had Bennet, John, Jeremiah, a second Sarah, Jonathan and Eliphalet. She called her son Bennet after her own family. The first Sarah died in December 1723 at thirteen, and the name was given again seven weeks later. Her son Jeremiah died in 1736 at fourteen.

In 1722 her father gave her husband half of his volunteer lot in Voluntown, Connecticut. His will remembered her as "Dorathy Wood." He died in 1726.

Jeremiah died in July 1730, when her youngest child was a year old. The Littleton clerk entered her own death twenty two years after his: "Dorathy Wood Releck Widow of Jeremiah wood Deceased July ye 17th 1752."
