Douwe Wiggersz
Douwe Wiggersz. lived at Enkhuizen, a port on the Zuiderzee in North Holland. His name is a patronymic, meaning Douwe son of Wigger, and he had no family surname. The clerks spelled it Wichersz., Wichertsz., Wijchersz., Wychersz. and Wiggersz. Douwe is a Frisian given name, but where he was born is not recorded.
On 30 November 1608 the banns of "Douwe Wichersz en Angniet Coens" were entered at Enkhuizen. Banns were the public announcement of an intended marriage, read in church on three Sundays so that anyone who knew of an obstacle could speak. He was living in the Westerstraat and she in the Bagijnestraat.
Seven children of the couple were baptized in the Reformed church at Enkhuizen. Johan came on 12 December 1610, Koen on 31 March 1613 and Stijntje on 22 January 1617. Baeffje followed on 29 July 1618, a second Baeffjen on 22 September 1619 and Sara on 11 May 1621. A second daughter given the same name fourteen months later means the first Baeffje had probably died. A Marijtgen baptized on 20 April 1615 was probably theirs too. Her entry names the father Douwe Wychersz., but the mother Agniet Thoms dr., which looks like a clerk's slip.
His second son was named Koen. Dutch custom named the first sons after the grandfathers, and Koen was the name of Agniete's father.
His trade and his death are not recorded, and his burial is not in the indexed Enkhuizen burials of 1621-1638. He was dead by 28 August 1638. That day, in Amsterdam, "Stijntie Douwes van Enckhuijsen," aged twenty-one, registered her banns to marry Jacob Leurtsz of Wageningen and said she had no parents living.
