Dr. Jacob Benepe
A physician who settled at New Philadelphia, in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, and died in the county before July 1828, leaving seven children and an estate that could not pay its own debts.
His family is known through the only kind of document that had to get it right. In July 1828 the administrator of his estate went to the Court of Common Pleas for leave to sell the land, and to do that he had to name every heir. Seven of them, from a married daughter down to children with guardians over them, and the second on the list is "Carolin Hummin wife of Michael I Bennett". His widow Harriet had already married Samuel Thomas, who was accordingly guardian to four of his stepchildren.
What sort of man he was survives only in his grandson's account of him, printed in an Illinois county encyclopedia in 1918: a physician of some note, a native of Geneva, of French origin, whose wife was Welsh. No other record confirms any of it.
