Edna Nelson
Edna Nelson was born in Laurens County, South Carolina, in the early 1830s. The census takers wrote her name as Edney. Her age was given as 15 in 1850, 27 in 1860 and 50 in 1880.
She married Green Berry Fuller, a farmer, very young. In 1850 they were living in a house of their own in Laurens County, he 20 and she 15. In the next house lived Nancy Nelson, 55, with two grown children, Elizabeth and Beaufort T. Nelson. No record says how Edna was related to them.
Her first son, John, was born in November 1850. By June 1860 she had five children: John, William, Maria, Nancy and the baby Elihu. A John M. Nelson, 16, was living with them that year and going to school.
Green Berry died before 1880. In June of that year Edney was a widow of 50, keeping house in Waterloo Township with her children Nancy, 23, Jones, 21, and Sally, 18. Nancy and Jones worked as farm labourers and Sally was at school. Her son William and his family lived next door, and her son John and his family lived in the house after that. The eldest daughter of her son William Fuller was named Edney after her. In 1923 her son John's death certificate named his mother as Edna Nelson, born in Laurens County.
