Edward Frost was a clothier of Stanstead, a small parish in the cloth country of west Suffolk, on the hill above the Glem valley. A clothier was the master of the cloth trade in that country: he bought the wool, put it out to spinners and weavers in their own cottages, and sold the finished cloth.
He was christened at St Mary's in Glemsford, the next parish down the Glem, on 13 March 1560/1, the son of John Frost. He married Thomasine Belgrave in the same church on 26 September 1585, and moved to Stanstead about 1588. Their children were christened at St James's, Stanstead, from 1589: William, Ann, Alice, Mary, Thomasine, Edward, a second Mary, John, and two boys called Thomas, the first of whom lived seven weeks. His eldest daughter Elizabeth married a Henry Rice there in November 1605.
He made his will on 26 July 1616 and was buried at Stanstead on 3 August. The will was proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury on 4 October. It left bequests to his wife Thomasine, whom he made executrix, to his son William, and to his five daughters: "Elizabeth, now the wife of Henry Rice; Anne now the wife of Laurence Collen; Alice, wife of Thomas Blower, Mary Frost and Thomasine Frost." It also remembered a grandson, Edward Rice, the son of his daughter Elizabeth. Two years later his unmarried daughter Thomasine married Edmund Rice, and their sons were christened Henry, Edward and Thomas.
