Elbert Earle McDonald
Elbert Earle McDonald, known as Earl, was born on 24 March 1889 at Celeste, a railroad town in the blackland of Hunt County, Texas. His father, Elbert M. McDonald, was an Alabamian born in 1840; his mother, Frances J. Slater, was from Mississippi and died when he was a boy. By June 1900 his father had married a North Carolina widow, Sarah E. Roberts, and the census of Celeste lists Elbert E., eleven, among four McDonald children, four Roberts stepchildren and a new baby brother, Virgil.
He went north into Oklahoma as a young man. On 29 July 1910, aged 21 and living at Lexington in Cleveland County, he applied at Norman for a licence to marry Susie M. Edgemon, eighteen, born in Oklahoma, and Henry H. Cordell, the Baptist minister at Science Hill, married them at Lexington on 10 August 1910. The couple moved south to Davis in Murray County, where their daughter Flora Ruth was born on 6 July 1915, and where on 5 June 1917 Earl registered for the draft: 28, farming for himself, married, "wife and two children" dependent on him, medium height and build, grey eyes, dark hair. He claimed exemption as a member of a church.
By 1920 the family was in Hughes County, with Ruth, Joe and Bobie at home, and they settled at Calvin, where Ruth graduated from high school in 1933 and where Earl and Susie were still farming in 1940. He died at Calvin on 10 October 1943, aged 54, and was buried in the Calvin Cemetery under a double stone cut McDONALD, AT REST, with Susie's side waiting. His two sons died before their sister Ruth, who lived to 101.
