Eli Stanley was born in Henry County, Georgia on 28 October 1832, and he died in the same county on 4 June 1905, aged seventy two. He could not write his name.

On 19 January 1853 Alex Johnson of DeKalb County issued a licence for E Stanley to marry Miss Nancy M. Peak, and the next day Ephraim Clark, a justice of the peace, returned that he had joined them. He was twenty. She was twenty two and had come down from North Carolina. They went back to Henry County and stayed, and the census found them there in 1860, in 1880 and in 1900, the last time in the same militia district as the daughter who had married Charles Thurman.

He enlisted in April 1862, at twenty nine, a year after his county's first company had gone out, and served in Company K of the 22nd Georgia in Wright's Brigade. What the war did to him was not done in a battle. On guard duty in the middle of December 1863, in freezing weather, both his feet were frostbitten, and they crippled him for the rest of his life. He was at home in Henry County on furlough when Lee surrendered at Appomattox, and he was discharged that same day.

Georgia gave him a disabled soldier's pension of fifty dollars a year. He drew it for the last time on 24 January 1905 and was dead by June. His widow applied for hers in 1907 and was allowed it for 1908.

He farmed about a hundred and fifty acres in the Brushy Knob district, with Bob Thurman's ground on the north of him. His son William administered the estate nine years after his death, sold the land at the courthouse door in McDonough in October 1914 in parcels of forty to sixty acres, and was discharged in April 1915.
