Elinor Browne
Elinor Browne was born about 1649. She came into Maryland in 1670 and married Richard Warfield that year. He had been seated in the woods west of Crownsville, in Anne Arundel County, since 1662.
J. D. Warfield's 1905 history of the county's families calls her "Elinor, heiress of Captain John Browne, of London." By the same history Capt. John Browne and his brother, Capt. Peregrine Browne, "ran two of the best equipped merchant transports between London and Annapolis." Two adjoining tracts, Hope and Increase, were deeded in 1673 to "Captain John Browne, mariner, of London," and passed to the Warfields. After a fire burnt the county's land records in 1704, a Richard Warfield had the history of those two tracts entered again in 1705.
In 1675 she and her husband were summoned as witnesses in the chancery contest over the will of their next neighbour, Nicholas Wyatt. The papers of 1679 in that case call the couple "Richard and Elen Warfield."
Her children were John, born in 1674, Richard, Alexander, Benjamin, born in 1680, Rachel in 1681 and Elinor in 1683, with a daughter Mary. Mary married a Captain Howard and died before 1704. Rachel married George Yates in 1700 and died in 1709.
Her husband died early in 1704, "at an advanced age." His will left their daughter Ellinor the dwelling plantation while she was unmarried, and Ellinor married Caleb Dorsey of Hockley that same year. Elinor herself lived another fifteen years. Her son Benjamin died in 1717 and her eldest son John in July 1718. She was buried in All Hallows Parish on 13 February 1719.
Her own parents are not known for certain. Besides the London mariner of the 1905 history, one account makes her the Elnor Browne baptized at Godalming, Surrey, on 30 June 1649, a daughter of John and Ann Browne. Another makes her a Manchester-born daughter of Capt. John and Mary Browne.
