Elinor Herbert
Elinor Herbert is known from a single record. On 5 August 1707, Captain John Dorsey of Baltimore County, Maryland, deeded two tracts on the north side of the Patapsco River to Richard Colegate. Dorsey made the gift because Colegate had taken in marriage Rebecca Herbert, daughter of Elinor Herbert. The deed does not say how Dorsey was related to Elinor. Later writers have guessed she was his sister or his daughter.
Some later accounts call her Lady Herbert of Ireland, but no record supports the title. The Maryland legislative biography of Richard Colegate suggests, with doubt, that she was Elinor Pattison, wife of William Harbert, who died in 1718. Other accounts place that Eleanor in Charles County, born about 1660 and first married to John Angell. Those dates do not fit a daughter born in England in 1674, so this identification remains unproven.
Her daughter Rebecca married Richard Colegate, a merchant and legislator of the Patapsco River, by 1707. They had seven children: Prudence, Patience, Richard, Temperance, John, Thomas and Benjamin.
