Elisabeth Marie Henriksdatter Moss
Elisabeth Marie Henriksdatter came of the Moss family of Drammen, a rich merchant family of that river town. Most of what is known of her comes from the Søndeled og Risør historical society's yearbook for 2002. It gives her birth as 1714. Its index holds a Henrich Moss on the same pages, presumably her father, which fits her patronymic.
In 1747 she married Simon Nielsen Saxild, a merchant and timber dealer from Denmark settled at Risør. Their son Niels Henrich was baptized at Risør in December 1748. The Risør church book of those years names only fathers, so her motherhood of the boy rests on the yearbook.
Simon died at Århus in 1750. In 1751 she married again, to Claus Christophersen Winther, a sawmill owner and timber merchant who was one of the richest men in Risør. He was born in 1695, nineteen years before her. Winther brought up her son and taught him the trade. At fifteen the boy was sent to England to learn commerce. He came home to be a merchant and shipowner himself.
Winther died in 1766. She lived until 1794. By then her son had buried two wives and married a third, and a granddaughter born in 1786 had been christened Elisabeth Maria.
