Eliza Hawkins
Eliza Hawkins was born on 18 October 1812. Her stone gives the date. A family account names her parents as Gilbert Hawkins and Lydia Darling. In 1850 a Lydia Hawkins, 58, born in Massachusetts, was living in Eliza's house at Smithtown, and she was probably Eliza's mother.
She married Walter Darling of Smithtown on 28 December 1830, by the same account. She was probably the mother of all three of his known children: William Cornell Darling, born about 1831, Edgar F., about 1835, and Lydia A., about 1841. She was his wife by 1850 at the latest, and was about nineteen when William was born. The censuses write her Elisa, Eliza, Eliza A. and Hannah E., so her full name was probably Hannah Eliza.
On 21 June 1850 she and Walter sold twelve acres on the Nissequogue to George A. Darling. Like every married woman who signed away land in New York then, she was examined by the justice "apart from her husband" and said she signed "freely and without any fear threat or compulsion". That private examination protected a wife's dower, her right to a third of her husband's land for life.
In 1855 she was at New Lots in Kings County with Walter and the three children. They were back at Smithtown by 1860 and stayed. Walter died at St. Johnland in February 1886. Eliza died a year later, on 15 February 1887, aged 74. Her stone in Landing Cemetery reads "ELIZA, WIFE OF CAPT. WALTER DARLING".
