Eliza Jane McCrary was born on 18 April 1816. The 1850 and 1880 censuses give her birthplace as Tennessee. She was a daughter of Samuel McCrary and Bettie Allen, one of their twelve children. Her mother died in 1831 after the birth of the youngest, Druzie, when Eliza was fifteen.

In about 1835 she married George Rogers, a neighbour in the Crow Creek valley of Jackson County, Alabama. They had eleven children between 1836 and 1857. One son, Jim, was killed at Chickamauga at eighteen.

Her son William Leroy wrote in 1922 that she "said Jerry Matthews was one of the best neighbors she ever lived by." His daughter Druza was named for Eliza's youngest sister.

She and George moved to Young County, Texas, where the 1880 census finds them. George died in 1892. She died at Graham on 14 May 1897, aged eighty one. She was buried beside him at Center Ridge Cemetery, under a shared stone headed MOTHER.
