Elizabeth Balog
Born October 13, 1880 at Barca, a village at the edge of Kassa, now a district of Košice, Slovakia, daughter of George Balog and Mary Wargo; her husband's 1930 naturalization petition preserves the village. She crossed with George Eggett and the two boys around 1911 to 1913 and bore three more children in America. The family letter's aside about pictures of '(Eggett) and (Balog)' preserved her maiden name two generations after her, and her own death certificate confirms all of it: she died December 3, 1946 at Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois, and was buried three days later at Westville, the parish town where her daughter had married eight years before. Balog is a Hungarian-rooted surname common across southern Slovakia, and Barca itself sat on the language line; but the question the names raise, Magyar or Slovak, the 1910 manifest answers, entering the family as Slovaks. Her widowed husband went to live out his years in their daughter Mary's house in Ohio.
