Elizabeth (Betsey) Sherrill

Elizabeth Sherrill, called Betsey, was born on 28 September 1779, a daughter of Samuel Sherrill and of Catherine Russell. Her father was born at East Hampton on Long Island on 22 April 1748. Her mother, born 3 March 1750, was a daughter of Samuel Russell of East Hampton. Through her father she was a great granddaughter of Recompence Sherrill of East Hampton.

Her birthplace is not stated. East Hampton was under British control in the Revolution, and her grandfather Henry's household was on the American side. In 1782 or 1783 they removed to Richmond in the Berkshires of Massachusetts, so she may have been born at either place.

On 9 October 1798 she married Samuel Sherrill, born at East Hampton on 26 May 1774, who was a grandson of the same Recompence through his other son Jacob. Her husband's father Jacob and her own grandfather Henry were brothers, which made the couple first cousins once removed. His family had stayed at East Hampton through the war. Their son Horace Russell Sherrill was born on 12 September 1799, and his middle name is his grandmother Catherine's maiden name.

Her husband moved with his brothers Jacob and Lewis to Oneida County early in the nineteenth century and finally settled at Lebanon in New York. She died on 19 November 1835, four years before him. He died at Lebanon on 15 August 1839. Both her parents outlived her. Her mother died on 9 December 1838, and her father died at Richmond on 10 August 1840.
