Elizabeth Carpenter was born about 1817. The 1860 census and her daughter's death certificate give her birthplace as Mississippi; the 1850 census gives Missouri. She married Peter Adams Hanger, a Virginian. In the 1840s they lived in Arkansas, where their children Emeline, Mary, Sarah and David were born. By 1848 they were back in Missouri.
In 1850 the family farmed in Belleview Township, Washington County, Missouri. Elizabeth was 33, with six children at home, the youngest a girl of three months who was Elizabeth Frances. By 1860 they lived on Paint Rock Creek in Bowlin Township, Shannon County. That year she was 42, and her last child, Peter, was born. William H. had come in 1851.
In February 1865 her husband was taken from their home on Paint Rock Creek by Union soldiers and shot in the snow in Dixon Valley, Reynolds County. His body was not found until April. After the war his estate was administered by David C. Reed, and in October 1869 the county court had the land sold at auction at Centerville to pay its debts. What became of Elizabeth after that is not known. Her maiden name comes from the death certificate of her daughter Elizabeth, who died at Van Buren in 1913.
