Elizabeth Catherine Austin, called Caddie, was born in September 1846 in Wilcox County, Alabama, on the 29th by family accounts. About 1867 she married William Henry Godwin, who farmed in Wilcox County.

In June 1880 she was 32 and keeping house in Snow Hill Beat, Wilcox County, for her husband, listed as Henry Godwin, and their children Jacet T., 12, John, 8, Silvester, 4, Bettie, 4, and Jessie, 1. Henry Hamilton followed in 1881 and Dealy in 1886.

She died on 21 November 1924 at Rehoboth, Wilcox County, aged 78, and was buried in the Godwin Family Cemetery on the old Godwin farm. Her small stone reads "Caddie Austin, wife of W. H. Godwin". Her son John's death record gives his mother as Eliz Austin, and John himself carried Austin as his middle name. A typed family history and the family's own accounts write the surname Alston, and it appears that way under the one photograph of her, sitting beside her husband in spectacles and a white blouse.
