Elizabeth Cheatham

Elizabeth Cheatham was the wife of Guttridge Cheatham Sr. and the mother of his ten children, Patience among them. Her husband's will, signed on 9 November 1854, names her. Her maiden name is not known.

She was born about 1780. Her Find a Grave memorial gives that year and a Virginia birthplace, both without a source. Her husband was born in Edgefield District, South Carolina, about 1777, and the marriage was probably there. Her eldest daughter, Judea, was born in 1796, which puts the wedding about 1795. Patience, the fifth child, was born in 1804.

The family moved to Butler County, Alabama, about 1825. A family sheet says they came through Hancock County, Georgia, in a wagon train with other families, and settled in the northeast of the county. Moriah Baptist Church, a Primitive Baptist congregation founded in 1830, stood near the Lowndes County line. Primitive Baptists kept minute books recording members received and dismissed. Moriah's minutes list an Elizabeth Cheatham on 16 June 1832, and the compiler who published them believed she was this Elizabeth.

She was living in 1850, when the census found her in Butler County. In 1860 her husband, then eighty three, was living in their son Guttridge Jr.'s house, and she was not with him. Her death falls between those two censuses. If her husband's will of November 1854 named her as a living wife, she was still alive that autumn. She is probably buried at Moriah, where her husband also lies. No stone for her is known, and the 1780 and 1853 on her memorial are estimates.
