Elizabeth Colvell

Children include Joseph

Elizabeth was the wife of Joseph Colvell, who farmed on Opequon Creek in Frederick County, Virginia, near Winchester. Her maiden name is not recorded.

Her husband's will of 17 October 1757 calls her "my well beloved Wife" and the mother of his sons Joseph and Andrew. It made the two sons responsible for her. Out of the land they were to give her "a Sufficient Maintainance" and keep for her "two Cows and one Horse to Ride." It also gave her a hold over Andrew's inheritance. In the words of a 1933 transcription, she was to "have a power to stop her son Andrew from selling or disposing of his part of the land whilst she Liveth without her Consent but it shall remain for security for her maintenance." She received a third of the rest of his movable goods, with her son Samuel and her daughter Martha sharing the other two thirds.

He named her and their eldest son Joseph as executors. On 2 May 1758 "Elizabeth Colvill and Joseph Colvill the Executors" presented the will to the Frederick County court. That is the last record of her. On 14 June 1765 Andrew and his wife Mary sold his land without her, which O'Dell takes to mean she had died by then.
