Elizabeth Coogle

Elizabeth Coogle was born in Monongalia County, Virginia, about 1837. Her parents were Jonathan Coogle and Eleanor Holt, who had married in Monongalia County on 3 April 1823 before the minister Jacob Foreman. Her grandparents Benjamin and Dorcas Coogle were both born in Maryland. Her sister Dorothy R. Coogle lived with their grandfather and worked for him nearly all her life. In a codicil of 23 September 1851 he left Dorothy the bed she slept in, with its two double coverlids and several calico quilts, the only bureau in his house, and one milk cow of her own choosing. He signed it by mark.

She married Arnett Glasscock at Marion County on 6 May 1858, when she was twenty one and he twenty six. William R. White performed the marriage. Arnett was a son of Charles Glasscock and Polly Arnett, and Arnettsville was named for his mother's family. Their son J. Coleman Glasscock was born at Arnettsville on 8 February 1859.

Arnett served in the Sixth Infantry, a West Virginia Union regiment, in 1864 and 1865, and came home to farm the same district. She kept house in the Grant District and the 1880 census has her at forty four, with Arnett at forty eight and her son Jonathan C. at twenty one. Arnett died at Arnettsville on 21 November 1902 and is buried in Smith Cemetery there.

Her maiden name is on the death return of that son, who died at seventy eight in Marion County in 1937, and on her own marriage return, which also names her parents: JONOTHAN COOGLE and ELENOR. Elenor is Eleanor Holt, whose surname is on her own marriage return of 1823, in the next county. When Jonathan died is not known, and neither is when or where Elizabeth died.

COOGLE is a Monongalia and Preston County name. It is probably a worn-down form of the German Kugel or Gugel, though nothing documents an immigrant.
