Elizabeth Du Bois
Elizabeth Du Bois was born about 1643 and lived at Moeze, in Saintonge, on the Atlantic coast of France. She was a Huguenot, a French Protestant. She married Jean Mercereau, who was born about 1627. He died in France.
In 1685 Louis XIV revoked the Edict of Nantes and outlawed Protestant worship in France. About 1688 Elizabeth, by then a widow, came to New York with her children: Joshua, Daniel, Marie, and Elizabeth, already the wife of Pierre Masse. Her daughter Elizabeth and Pierre Masse had a son Daniel baptized at the French Church of New York on 5 May 1689.
In the summer of 1693 three of her children married at the French Church. On 16 July Marie married Jean La Tourette, a refugee from Béarn, and Joshua married Marie Chadaine, a shipmaster's daughter from Hiers, near Moeze. On 6 August Daniel married Suzanne Marie Doucinet of La Rochelle. Elizabeth was at that wedding. She made her mark as a witness, as "Elisabet Dubois."
The family settled on Staten Island, among the French refugee farms there, and she died on the island. The date of her death is not known. In 1725 two of her grandchildren married each other: Joshua's daughter Marie and Marie's son Jean La Tourette II.
