Elizabeth Graves
Elizabeth Graves, called Betsy, was born in March 1776, by her memorial in what became Shelby County, Kentucky. Her memorial names her parents as David Graves and Agnes Holloway, and her brothers and sisters as Barbara, Edmund, William, Richard and Susannah Graves.
She married John L. Leatherman, a Pennsylvanian a year younger, and bore eleven children from 1797 to about 1818: Elizabeth, Theresa, Samuel Gibbs, William David, Graves, Delilah, Peter, Daniel, Lucinda, John Thomas and Sarah. Her son Graves carried her maiden name.
In her later years she and John moved to Claiborne Parish, in north Louisiana, where several of her children had settled. She died at Athens on 10 June 1846, aged 70, and was buried in the Old Athens Cemetery.
Her father, David Graves, died in Shelby County early in 1808. His will of 9 January left the estate to her mother Agnes for life, then to be sold and divided equally among his children. It named her outright: the share "descending to Elizabeth Leatherman" was to be "lodged in the hands of Richard Graves for her use and under his directions," so her brother held it for her. In December 1804 she and John signed a deed together, selling eighty six acres of their Shelby County land to David Leatherman.
