Elizabeth Graydon
Elizabeth Graydon was born in South Carolina about 1797. She married William Graydon, who was born in South Carolina in 1793 and whose father lived in Laurens District. The FamilySearch collaborative tree gives the marriage as 12 November 1818 in Laurens. Two months later, on 14 January 1819, a train of emigrants from South Carolina camped on the site of Greenville, Alabama, and a William Graydon was among them. If the tree's date is right, she married on the eve of the move. They were in Butler County by 1825, when their daughter Emily was born there, in a county organised only six years before.
The 1850 census found her at fifty three with William and their Alabama-born children. Her daughter Lucinda Jane was seventeen and still at home.
On 23 February 1854 she and William mortgaged property to E. H. Blackmon for $125. The deed names "William Graydon, and Elizabeth Graydon (wife of the said William Graydon)." A wife's signature was needed so she could not later claim her dower in what was pledged. She signed her own name, Elizabeth Graydon. The witnesses were two of her children, Wm A. Graydon and Mary E. Grayden.
William died in 1866 without a will. On 13 March 1868 she petitioned the probate court of Butler County. A homestead claim set land apart for a widow, out of reach of the dead man's creditors. She asked for the southeast quarter of the southeast quarter of Section 21, Township 11, Range 15, forty acres.
Her maiden name has not been found. She was alive in March 1868, and no record of her death is known.
