Elizabeth Kuykendall
Elizabeth Kuykendall was the wife of Abraham Kuykendall in 1754, when the couple lived in Anson County, North Carolina, on the Catawba River frontier. Her maiden name is not recorded.
On 29 March 1753 Abraham had been granted 570 acres on the south side of the Catawba, on the south fork of Fishing Creek, "below George Ronarks Entry." In May 1754 the two of them sold it. Land was commonly conveyed then by two deeds on successive days, a lease and a release, which together passed the full title. Their lease is dated 16 May 1754 and the release 17 May. The deed opens "Abraham Kuykendall and Elizabeth his Wife of ye County of Anson in the province of North Carolina." The buyer was William Adear, and the price was thirty-six pounds in Virginia money. It is signed "Abraham Kuykendall (Seal) Elizabeth Kuykendall (Seal)." The witnesses were John Kuykendall, Joseph Harden and Charles Dunlap.
A wife joined in a sale like this to give up her dower, the life interest in a third of her husband's land that the law kept for a widow. The next deed in the book, of 10 December 1758, is John Kuykendall and his wife Rebecca selling 400 acres on the north branch of Fishing Creek to Peter Kuykendall. Abraham witnessed it.
She was very probably the mother of Matthew Kuykendall, who was born in North Carolina between about 1758 and 1763. No record names another wife of Abraham before 1800. Later family histories call her Elizabeth Fidler and say she married Abraham at Kingston, New York, in 1743, bore his first eleven children and died in 1800. The Kingston church's marriage register, printed for 1660 to 1809, has no marriage of an Abraham Kuykendall at all.
