Elizabeth Ridgeway

Virginia → Laurens District SC
Children include Mary

Elizabeth Lindley was the wife of Thomas Lindley, a blacksmith with a mill on Raburn's Creek in Laurens District, South Carolina. Three DAR applications of the twentieth century give her maiden name as Ridgeway. No earlier record names her family.

She married Thomas by 1785. On 15 May that year she signed with him when he sold 100 acres of his late father's land to Marmaduke Pinson. Later she released her dower when he sold 200 acres on Raburn's Creek to Joseph Johnson. In 1800 the census counted one woman between twenty six and forty five in his household, so she was probably born between about 1755 and 1774.

She and Thomas had twelve children. When he made his will in October 1809 he left her the home place and the mill for her lifetime, and named her an executor with their sons James and William. He died before January 1810.

She kept the land for thirteen years. In 1823, "being disposed to decline House keeping and to live with my children," she released her life estate to her sons Jonathan and Henry and their brothers. She was still acting as executrix in 1826. Her death is not recorded.
