Elizabeth Robinson
Elizabeth Robinson was born on 16 January 1830 in Russell County, Virginia. The name was written both Robinson and Roberson, and family accounts name her parents William Roberson and Hannah Hutchinson.
She married Tandy Branham, a farmer a year younger, in Russell County, and they raised their family in Wise County. Their eldest known child, Martha Jane, was born on 1 December 1853, and Nancy, William, Edith, Wilburn, Ella and John followed. The birth registers name the mother of Martha, Nancy, William and Edith as Elizabeth Branham.
In September 1863 Tandy came home on furlough from the Confederate army and was killed. Elizabeth was 33, with young children and the war still on. She never married again.
On 26 November 1890, living at the Pound in Wise County, she went before Judge N. T. Miller of the county court to apply for the pension Virginia had begun to pay the widows of its soldiers. She swore that she was the widow of Tandy Branham, a member of a company "which belonged to Gen. Floyd Brigade", that he "was killed while at home on furlough by the Federal soldiers" in Wise County, that they had married in Russell County, and that she had not married again. She signed by her mark. The judge certified her entitled to thirty dollars a year, and the claim was approved as Wise County number 28.
In 1874 her daughter Martha married William J. Fleming, and the Wise County clerk wrote the bride's mother as E. Branham. Elizabeth's last years were spent at Flemingtown, near Clintwood, where the Flemings lived. She died there on 15 March 1916, aged 86, and was buried in the Fleming Cemetery. Her stone reads: "Elizabeth Branham, Born Jan. 16, 1830, Died Mar. 15, 1916, Age 86 yrs. 1 mo. 29 das. She died as she lived, a Christian."
When Martha died in 1934, her death certificate gave her mother's maiden name as Elizabeth Robinson.
