Elizabeth Smith
She is on a customs house list. In 1634 the Elizabeth sailed from Ipswich in Suffolk and the clerk wrote down Samuel Smith aged thirty two, his wife Elizabeth aged thirty two, and their children Samuel aged nine, Elizabeth seven, Mary four and Philip one. That single line gives her birth year, the approximate date of her marriage, her port and the size of her household.
What followed was two migrations. The family sat down first at Watertown with most of that ship's passengers, then moved to Wethersfield on the Connecticut within a few years. She bore at least two more children there, Chiliab about 1636 and John some years after. A daughter Mary, who is not named in her husband's will, had probably died young. In 1659 the household moved again, to Hadley, with the party that had lost the church quarrel at Wethersfield.
Her husband was the most frequently returned representative Wethersfield ever sent, commanded the Hadley militia for fifteen years, and died in December 1680 or January 1681. She lived another four years and died on 16 March 1685. Her daughter Elizabeth married Nathaniel Foote in 1646, was widowed at about twenty eight, married William Gull, and outlived him too.
