Elizabeth Tate
Elizabeth Tate was born on 24 July 1800. About 1819 she married John Sargent, a carpenter of the South Carolina upcountry, and over the next fourteen years she bore seven children: William C. in 1820, Ephraim B. in 1822, Benjamin Tate in 1824, Peter K. in 1825, Polly A. in 1827, Seabron Humphrey in 1829 and John C. in November 1833. Her third son carried her surname as his middle name.
The family moved into Cherokee County, Georgia, where her husband sat as a justice of the county court at Canton. In 1834 he drowned in the Etowah River beside the court-house, after jumping in to save one of their sons. The Sargent Record of 1899 says that she died the same year at Canton and that both were buried there. It gives no cause and no month for her death.
She left seven children, the youngest not a year old. What became of them as children is not recorded. Her eldest son William married a Polly Tate of Cobb County in 1845. Whether Polly was kin to her is not known.
Her parents are not known. A memorial makes her a daughter of John Tate Sr. and Phebe Callaway. A John Tate who died in 1858 aged 85 and a Phebe, wife of John Tate, who died in 1855 aged 83, lie in the Tate Cemetery near Sonoraville, Gordon County, Georgia. They were old enough to be her parents, but nothing found names her as their child.
