Born 1877, County Cork, Ireland

Ellen Flynn was the daughter of William Flynn, a farm labourer of Ballydoyle, a townland near Castletownroche in north County Cork. Her mother was dead by 1901. On census night that year she was 22 and living at home in house 16, Ballydoyle, with her widowed father, her brothers Cornelius, 26, and Michael, 15, her sister Eliza, 18, a young cousin, William Hayes, and a boarder.
On 7 January 1905, at the Roman Catholic chapel of Castletownroche, she married Cornelius O'Brien, a labourer of Myrath. She was of full age and a spinster, and she signed her own name in the marriage book while her husband made his mark. Her father was living. Her sister Eliza, written Lizzie, stood witness with Bartholomew O'Brien.
Her daughter Mary was born at Kilquane on 8 December 1905 and her daughter Margaret at Castletownroche on 25 October 1906. In April 1911 the family lived in house 13 in Castletownroche. Ellen gave her age as 34 and could read and write. She had been married six years and had borne five children, all of them living: Mary 5, Margaret 4, Ellen 3, Cornelius 1, and William, five months old.
Her sixth child, Hannah, was born on 15 August 1912 and registered in the Fermoy district with her mother's maiden name, Flynn. In March 1930 Hannah sailed for Hartford, Connecticut, to join her uncle, Eugene Flynn, at 89 Martin Street, and her sister, Miss M. O'Brien, who had paid her fare. The passenger list names her brother Cornelius at Castletownroche as her nearest relative, not her mother. Hannah became Anna Waters of Hartford. When and where Ellen died has not been found.
